Man Hit by 4 Train at Upper East Side Station Had Legs Severed in Collision

The 50-year-old man was seen throwing himself in front of a 4 train at the 59th Street & Lexington Avenue station, police said.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A man lost his legs after throwing himself in front of a 4 train at the 59th Street & Lexington Avenue subway station early Wednesday morning, police told Patch.

Police did not identify the man but said he was 50-years-old. He was transported to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital by EMS and was conscious and alert, police said.

A police investigation revealed that the man was seen jumping onto the tracks. The train operator was unable to stop the train before hitting the man, police said. During the collision, the man's legs were severed below the knee, police said.
