Man Arrested After Robbing 2 Upper East Side Banks: Police

The man was stopped by a police officer who matched him with a description of the bank robber.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A bank robber was arrested on the Upper East Side Monday shortly after hitting two area banks, police told Patch.

John Gregg, 39, was taken into custody near First Avenue and East 84th Street after a police officer matched him to the description of a man who robbed two area banks just minutes earlier, police said.

Gregg had entered a Citibank branch on Third Avenue near East 82nd Street around 11:30 a.m. and handed a teller a note demanding money, police said. The bank teller refused to comply and Gregg left the bank, police said.

After leaving the Citibank, Gregg entered a Ridgewood Savings Bank on Second Avenue near East 73rd Street and repeated the same routine, police said. Gregg was handed $720 by a teller and he fled the bank, police said.

Gregg has been charged with third-degree robbery and third-degree attempted robbery, according to court records. Gregg was scheduled to appear in court for the first time on Tuesday, Oct. 18, according to the court records.
