Stolen Taxi Crashes On Upper East Side: NYPD

A car thief piloted a stolen taxi around Manhattan on Sunday before crashing it on the Upper East Side and fleeing the scene, police said.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A car thief piloted a stolen taxi around Manhattan on Sunday before crashing it on the Upper East Side and fleeing the scene, according to police.

Around 10 a.m. Sunday, a taxi driver left his cab unattended on 610 Columbus Avenue near West 90th Street on the Upper West Side, when another man got into the car and drove away, police said.

Hours later, at 4:36 p.m., police in East Harlem saw the taxi run through a red light and tried to pull it over, but the rogue taxi refused to stop, police said.

Around 5 p.m., police responded to a reported crash at the intersection of Lexington Avenue and East 88th Street. Video from the scene shared on the Citizen app after the crash showed the SUV-style taxi with front-end damage as emergency responders blocked off a stretch of Lexington Avenue.

There were no reported injuries and the suspect apparently fled, according to police. An investigation is ongoing.
