The fire started in a building on Second Avenue between East 89th and 90th streets.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Firefighters battled a two-alarm fire for nearly two hours Tuesday morning on the Upper East Side, an FDNY spokesman said.

Reports of a fire at 1720 Second Ave. — a building located between East 89th and 90th streets — came in shortly before 10:30 a.m., an FDNY spokesman said. When firefighters arrived on scene the response was upgraded to a two-alarm fire, meaning that 60 firefighters and 25 vehicles were on scene, the spokesman said.

The fire broke out in the ductwork between the first and second floors of the five-story building, fire officials said. The building's first floor is occupied by a restaurant called Infirmary and the rest of the building is residential.
