Water Main Break Shuts Down Upper East Side Avenue

Madison Avenue was shut down from East 57th to East 65th street after a water main break flooded the streets.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A stretch of Madison Avenue on the Upper East Side was closed off to traffic Tuesday evening after a water main break turned the busy avenue into a river, according to the NYPD's 19th precinct.

Madison Avenue was shut down between East 57th and 65th streets Tuesday evening as responders attempted to repair the broken water main, police said. The water main break occurred near the intersection of East 65th Street and Madison Avenue, an FDNY spokesman said.

Firefighters responded to the intersection around 5:45 p.m. and worked with utility companies to shut off the water, an FDNY spokesman said.
