1970's NY Dem Gov. Carey: Accepted Trump Campaign Contributions

Did Democratic Party politicians in New York State, like 1970's New York Governor Hugh Carey, serve Trump's special interests historically?

Most Democratic Party Establishment politicians in New York State these days don't accept campaign contribution money from the Billionaire NYC Real Estate Deal-Maker-turned U.S. President: Donald Trump. And Democratic Party Establishment politicians in New York State (and even, apparently, some neocon Republican Party Establishment politicians in the USA) want to replace GOP President Trump with former 21st-century Democratic Vice President Joe Biden in the White House oval office on January 20, 2021.

Yet, ironically, during the 1970's Democratic Party Establishment politicians in New York State like New York State's Democratic governor between 1975 and 1983, Hugh Carey (who died in 2011, at the age of 92), did accept campaign contribution money from Donald Trump during the 1970's. In their 1981 book, The Permanent Government: Who Really Rules New York?, Jack Newfield and Paul DuBrul, for example, described how Trump acquired special political influence in New York City during the 197's and how this special influence was apparently used, historically, to benefit Trump's special interests:

"Donald Trump...is the city's most aggressive and politically connected developer. Trump and his family have donated or loaned money to almost every important elected official in the city and state, including giving Governor Carey a total of $102,000 in his last two elections--plus co-signing a $300,000 bank loan. Trump has hired Carey's fund-raiser--Louise Sunshine--as his own lobbyist; he has hired Carey's friend and fat cat-lawyer Arthur Emil--as one of his lawyers...He even donated $5,000 to Mayor Koch during 1979 and 1980--when there were no elections.

"As a result, Trump managed to get the city to rescind the taxes on his new Grand Hyatt Hotel for 40 years; he managed to convince the city to spend $375 million to build a new convention center on land he held an option on: and he managed to get all the necessary zoning variances and municipal assistance in purchase of the Bonwit Teller building on Fifth Avenue, where Trump is building a 62-floor luxury tower."

Yet The Permanent Government book also noted, as long ago as 1981, that "builders Donald and Fred Trump...have been accused by the Justice Department of violating the Fair Housing Act by discriminating against Blacks in their rental policies" and "the Trump family owns and rents 14,000 apartments."
