85-Year-Old Veteran, Ballet Teacher Dies After Being Hit by Truck on Upper West Side
The man was crossing the street on West End Avenue and West 93rd Street when he was struck by a box truck. The driver stayed on scene.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Police have identified an elderly man who died this month after being struck by a box truck in August.
George Mamales, 85, was crossing the intersection at West End Avenue and West 93rd Street when he was hit by a truck around 3:50 p.m. on Tuesday, August 23, police told Patch. First responders found Mamales unconscious and unresponsive with head trauma, police said.
Mamales was taken to St. Luke's Hospital, police said. He was pronounced dead on Sept. 11, police told Patch.

The driver of the box truck stayed at the scene of the collision and was not charged, police said.
Mamales was a veteran of the Korean War and a successful ballet dancer, according to an obituary on legacy.com. Mamales also taught ballet dancing and pilates.

During his career as a ballet dancer, Mamales performed with American Ballet Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, Ruth Page of Chicago, Ballet Alicia Alonzo, Brooklyn Ballet, and Radio City Music Hall, according to his obituary.
