Potential Nor’easter Could Slam NYC With Rain, Wind, Flooding, Forecasters Say

NEW YORK CITY — As autumn begins in New York City, forecasters are warning of a potential nor'easter that could bring significant impacts to New York City later this week, with heavy rain, strong wind gusts and coastal flooding.

According to AccuWeather meteorologists, the storm will develop near the Carolinas midweek and sweep up along the coast.

Meteorologists from the National Weather Service say that the storm could land in New York City by Friday morning and wash out the weekend.

A full moon will bring higher tides, adding to the coastal impacts and tropical characteristics of the storm, AccuWeather officials said.

"Because waters are warm enough, thanks to the Gulf Stream off of the mid-Atlantic and southern New England, and the long duration the storm spends over these waters, it has the potential to acquire tropical characteristics and could become a tropical or subtropical storm this weekend," AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said.

However, four days out, the exact forecast remains uncertain. The storm's impact depends on the track it takes as it makes its way up the coast, meteorologists said.

If the storm hugs the coast, the five boroughs will be directly in its path, but if the storm stays slightly offshore, the city will be on the outskirts of the storm system, AccuWeather meteorologists said.

If New York City ends up in the storm's path, the city could experience travel disruptions due to moderate coastal flooding, isolated flash flooding and potential power outages, AccuWeather meteorologists said.

For now, the National Weather Service is predicting a 40 to 50 percent chance of rain this weekend. Patch will continue to share updates as the forecast becomes more solid.
