Charles Pan-Fried Chicken Opens Up Shop On Upper West Side

The popular Harlem soul-food joint opened its Upper West Side location this week. Here's what to know about its tasty creations.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — The popular Charles Pan-Fried Chicken opened on the Upper West Side this week with some serious buzz.

Almost 30 years after the Harlem fried chicken institution opened its first sidewalk operation, chef and owner Charles Gabriel just opened its location at 144-146 West 72nd Street — between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues.

The Upper West Side location is the first Charles Pan-Fried Chicken Gabriel unrolled after closing his original and lone storefront last year at 2461 Frederick Douglass Boulevard and West 132nd Street.

Gabriel plans to soon open a store at 340 West 145th Street, but it has been delayed by a series of gas and electric issues.

The Upper West Side location serves up fried chicken, biscuits, waffles, collard greens, mac and cheese, sandwiches, ribs, pulled pork, cornbread and more.

Charles Fried Chicken is famous for making its chicken in a cast-iron skillet, opposed to a deep fryer.

Charles Pan Fried Chicken's Instagram posts about the new Upper West Side locations are filled with "welcome to the neighborhood" messages and good reviews.

"I had fried chicken, collard greens, and yams for lunch — spectacularly delicious," one commenter wrote.

The fried chicken spot is currently open until 11 p.m. each day.
