UPPER WEST SIDE, MANHATTAN — The Upper West Side has gotten its first kosher meal distribution site.

A new site in the city's "Grab & Go" meal program, which offers free meals during the coronavirus pandemic, opened Tuesday at P.S. 75 on West End Avenue.

It is the first kosher food option in the neighborhood and comes after elected officials like Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal advocated for adding a kosher site in the neighborhood.

"...I was disturbed to learn that my constituents on the West Side, many of whom are Jewish and keep kosher, are not being provided with kosher meal options at any grab and go locations," Rosenthal wrote in an April letter to Mayor Bill de Blasio.

"The Upper West Side has one of the highest concentrations of senior citizens in the City, and it is essential, especially now, that the most vulnerable New Yorkers have access to quality food."

The city's Department of Education, which runs the sites, started adding kosher options to some of its locations in late April.

The Upper West Side location will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at P.S. 75, which is found at 735 West End Ave. near West 95th Street.
