Giant Chinatown Dim Sum Restaurant To Open Upper West Side Outpost

The Amsterdam Avenue Jing Fong Dim Sum spot is expected to open in two months, but it won't be as large as the 800-seat Chinatown location.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A gigantic dim sum restaurant in Chinatown will expand into the Upper West Side, according to multiple reports.

Jing Fong Dim Sum — which operates a 20,000-square-foot, 800-seat Chinatown — is expected to open on Amsterdam Avenue between West 78th and 79th streets in about two months, the New York Times first reported. Compared to Jing Fong's Elizabeth Street location the Upper West Side outpost will contain a modest 100 seats, with about 40 of those located in an outdoor seating area, according to the report.

While smaller, the Upper West Side's Jing Fong location will be serving up dim sum and Cantonese favorites offered at the original Chinatown spot such as steamed dumplings, steamed pork buns, sesame rolls and barbecue ribs.

Jing Fong was founded in 1978 in a 150-seat Chinatown location before moving to its current, enormous, location in 1993, according to the restaurant's website. The Chinatown location offers free delivery, but it's currently unknown whether Jing Fong's Upper West Side location will deliver.

A message left with Jing Fong Dim Sum was not immediately returned.
