Love Health And Beauty Store To Close On Upper West Side After 35 Years
An unfriendly climate for small businesses is behind the shuttering of Love.
UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — It's the end of an era for local health and beauty sore Love, which is closing its last outpost on the Upper West Side later this month, according to a report.
The Love store on West 72nd Street between Amsterdam and Columbus avenues will permanently close on June 25, chronicler of gentrification Jeremiah Moss first reported for his blog "Vanishing New York."
A note with the heading "last days of Love" was spotted in the discount store's window this week by a tipster, Moss reported. The message, from the store's ownership, explained that Love will be shutting down due to the now-unfriendly climate for small businesses.

"The climate for small businesses like ours has fallen precipitously. This reality is ever present as you stroll along the streets of a city marked by empty storefronts where thriving independent businesses once stood. Many have or will be replaced by national retail conglomerates or consolidated by 'big box' stores. Small businesses like ours also see customers come into their stores to learn, and then they make their purchase online," read the note in Love's window.
The note also advertised that all merchandise except for cigarettes will be 30 percent off between June 2 and 25. At its heydey, Love had as many as 35 storefronts in New York City, according to the message.
