Man Dies After Plunging From Upper West Side Fire Escape: Police

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A 30-year-old man fell to his death Friday morning from the fire escape of his Upper West Side building, according to police.

Police discovered the man at 2:12 a.m. on the pavement behind his building at 178 West 81st Street.

"Upon arrival, officers discovered a 30-year-old male, unconscious and unresponsive, lying on the pavement," a police spokesperson told Patch.

Emergency medical service pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

It was not immediately clear if the man accidentally tumbled to his death or if someone pushed him from the fire escape, according to police.

Police have told multiple news sources that there was a person with him at the time of the fall.

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death, and the investigation remains ongoing.
