Man Struck, Killed By Tow Truck On Upper West Side, Police Say

A man was walking against traffic on the West Side Highway when he was struck by a tow truck, police said.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A man was killed Sunday on the Upper West Side when he was struck by a truck on the West Side Highway, police said.

A 31-year-old man was walking in the southbound lane of the West Side Highway in the vicinity of West 107th Street around 8 a.m. Sunday when he was hit by a tow truck, police said. The pedestrian was found unconscious and unresponsive with head trauma and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police said the pedestrian was walking against traffic on the highway, but did not explain how he gained access to the vehicle-only roadway. The man was not identified by police.

The tow truck driver, a 70-year-old man, remained on the scene of the collision and was not charged, police said.

The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the fatal crash.
