New Homeless Shelter Coming To The Upper West Side: Politician
The news of an arriving shelter comes after homeless residents staying at the Lucerne caused a rift within the Upper West Side community.
UPPER WEST SIDE, NY ā A local politician confirmed to Patch that a new homeless shelter is coming to the Upper West Side.
Council Member Helen Rosenthal said that the Department of Homeless Services stated a new homeless shelter facility is headed to the Upper West Side's Community District 7.
No location has been identified, nor is there a timeline for the new shelter to open up in the neighborhood.

The Department of Homeless Services also confirmed to the West Side Rag that a new shelter facility will be coming to the Upper West Side, and described the facility as "long term."
The news comes just days after the city announced it was moving the homeless shelter residents out of the Lucerne on 201 West 79th Street to the Radisson Hotel in downtown Manhattan. The relocation of nearly 300 homeless men to the Lucerne at the end of July caused major division among Upper West Side residents.

The Lucerne residents were initially going to get relocated to the Harmonia in midtown Manhattan, but the plan got abandoned after the city faced intense criticism for displacing residents already staying at the shelter.
