New Section Opened In Riverside Park South: Pictures

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A new section of Riverside Park opened on Thursday after an extended construction project.

The section is a 4.6-acre space from West 65th Street to West 68th Street.

The area includes a new playground, multiple walkways and pathways for bikers, benches, an assortment of greenery, volleyball courts, and a dog run.

Riverside Park Conservancy tweeted about the opening on Thursday, and Upper West Siders are clearly excited about the new space.

"It's been looking great behind the fence when I run by — can't wait to run through tomorrow," one Twitter user wrote in response to the news.

"Looks great and looking forward to seeing it in person," another Twitter user wrote.

The completion of the project marks the end of the fifth phase of projects in Riverside Park South. The Conservancy will now turn its attention to the final phase of Riverside Park South's reconstruction, which is work between 59th and 65th Streets expected to start this fall and last close to two years.

The announcement of the opening near West 65th Street comes the same day that a new bike education center got opened in Riverside Park farther uptown. A ceremony was held at 10:30 a.m. for the John-Carlo Monti Community Bike Education Center at West 158th Street in the park.
