CENTRAL PARK, NY - An Upper West Side man has been charged in an assault on a 66-year-old cyclist on a Central Park bike path last week, authorities said.

Angelo Del Guercio, 59, was charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon Friday about 1 p.m., police said.

The hit took place about 2:20 p.m. Thursday while the cyclist was riding on a bike path near West 96th Street and West Drive, police said.

After she nearly collided with Del Guercio, who was walking along the path, Del Guercio yelled at her and struck her with a collapsible baton, police said.

The cyclist fell off the bicycle and onto the ground while her 29-year-old daughter, who was also riding on a bicycle and witnessed the incident, attempted to confront the assailant, police said.

Del Guercio fled the location soon after, police said.

Medics rushed the cyclist, who sustained a laceration to her head, to Mount Sinai Hospital in stable condition, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
