UPPER WEST SIDE, MANHATTAN — A man trying to steal detergent from Westside Market stabbed a worker in the shoulder who tried to stop him on Sunday, police said.

The man walked into the market at 2589 Broadway just before 3:30 a.m., grabbed laundry detergent from the shelves and tried to walk out without paying, police said.

When a 31-year-old employee came up to the man and confronted him about the merchandise, the thief took out a sharp object and stabbed a "small puncture wound" to the worker's left shoulder, police said.
