Giant Sinkhole Opens Up On Upper West Side Street, Officials Say
A defective pipe caused a massive sinkhole to open up Monday morning on West 82nd Street.
UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A water main broke Monday morning on the Upper West Side, causing a massive sinkhole to open up on a residential street, city officials said.
A water main ruptured on West 82nd Street between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West shortly after 8:30 a.m., an FDNY spokesman told Patch. Water started flowing out of the busted pipe, causing the ground around it to collapse, officials said.
Police shut down the street to traffic as crews from Con Edison and the city Department of Environmental Protection operated at the scene of the sinkhole. Water service has been restored to everyone affected by the defective pipe, the city DEP said.
