Transatlantic travel evolved slowly after the 1819 Steerage Act. Genealogists feel fortunate when they find a manifest noting a famiiy member's port of entry in the U.S. But how did our ancestors book passage from their country, and get to the port of departure? What was it really like to travel on a merchant vessel? Find out how they got here -- and how the transportation methods (wagon, canal boat, train) from 1817  to the early 1900s helped them reach their final destinations.
