1 Person, Critically Hurt, Falls Off Wantagh Fishing Pier: Police

It happened Sunday morning before dawn near Sloop Channel.

WANTAGH, NY — One person fell into the water while fishing from a pier in Wantagh. The male victim, 30, was fishing with his friends just before 5 a.m. Sunday when he fell underneath the Greene Island Fishing Pier, police said.

A second man, 30, jumped into the water to save his friend. Both victims drifted approximately a half-mile west into Sloop Channel, when they were rescued by Nassau County's Marine Bureau.

The 30-year-old man was found unresponsive and not breathing. Officers performed CPR. He is in critical but stable condition. The second victim was not injured.
