LONG ISLAND, NY — The MTA voted unanimously in favor of a 4 percent fare increase systemwide, including the Long Island Rail Road.
Board member Neal Zuckerman said, though, "This is not a fare hike."
"This is an increase. I don't want a hike," he said. "A hike is something like double digits. This is no hike."
However, riders are likely to see the incremental increase in 2025 and 2027, as well, Newsday reported.
This is the first increase since the pandemic.
The fare changes are expected to go into effect on or about Aug. 20.
Riders will still receive a 10% discount for monthly tickets, while a new peak, City ticket will be available for $7. The LIRR is also testing a ticket for Far Rockaway commuters for the same price as City tickets
