SEAFORD, NY — Seaford School District’s music program was named a Best Community for Music Education this month, the seventh consecutive time the district has received the honor, district officials said.
Handed out by the NAMM Foundation, the charitable arm of the trade organization the National Association of Music Merchants, the national recognition is in its 27th year. District officials said it highlights “exemplary dedication to music education.”
In Seaford, that commitment starts in kindergarten, when music instruction begins, and then continues through fourth grade when students are allowed to join the chorus and band. By high school, there are vocal and instrumental ensembles, concert groups and community opportunities like the Hot Chocolate Run and Memorial Day Parade for students to showcase their talents.
“There’s such a deep community commitment to our music program,” Seaford coordinator of fine and applied arts Dr. Patrick Kennedy said. “From the staff to the students to the families, everyone in Seaford is invested in the continued success of music education.”
Not to be subjected to questions of partiality, district officials said the schools selected as Best Communities for Music Education were chosen through an application process that factors in community support, facilities, funding, instruction time and participation in each music program. The selected schools, district officials said, were then reviewed by an independent researcher.
