JONES BEACH, NY — The state's Parks and Recreation Department is now saying a swimmer at Jones Beach State Park Field 6 was bitten by "unknown marine wildlife" at around noon on Friday.

Jones Beach State Park lifeguards and Emergency Medical technicians responded immediately, and found that the swimmer sustained lacerations to the right foot, according to statement released to Patch.

The person was taken to Nassau County University Medical Center Hospital in East Meadow with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Swimming was immediately suspended, and the beachfront was searched for dangerous marine life, officials said, adding that "after no sharks or other dangerous marine life" were observed for an hour, swimming was reauthorized but restricted to wading up to swimmers’ waists.

The incident is under investigation, according to officials.

Beachgoers were told to stay out of the water on Thursday after a nine-foot shark was spotted just off the coast of Point Lookout.

Tom Gambardella contributed additional reporting to this story.
