Breast Cancer Walk Honors LI Author, Patient Who Died This Year

The Jones Beach fundraising event takes place on Oct. 15.

WANTAGH, NY — A bittersweet fundraising event is happening this month at Jones Beach. Readers of "Along Came Cancer" will be walking for "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer."

Author Valerie Mortimer died in March after a 10-year battle with metastatic breast cancer.

Mortimer's team, called "Val's Pals" has raised $30,000 for the American Cancer Society with proceeds from the sale of her book going to a charity providing resources and retreats for cancer patients.

"Along Came Cancer" focuses on living well in spite of a cancer diagnosis and serves as a useful guide to navigating expectations.

"Participating in this walk inspires hope to everyone and anyone who is fighting their cancer battle today," said Christopher Mortimer, Valerie’s oldest son.
