Hidden Treasures Advocacy , joins advocatesand elected officials as well as the stream of disability groups expressing outrage at the recent statement released by the Trump Justice Department Office of Legal Counsel (OLC). The OLC seeks to justify forcing people with disabilities to be locked away in institutional settings in complete opposition to the 1999 United States Supreme Court decision in Olmstead vs L.C and E.W., a decision that affirmed the right of people with disabilities to live in their own homes and communities.
The Olmstead decision is part of a whole body of law that established and affirmed the rights of disabled people to live in, work in, go to school in, participate in and contribute to their communities.Those rights are additionally guaranteed by laws that include the 1975 Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that says disabled students have the right to a free and appropriate education like any other student, to be delivered in typical school settings with any needed services and supports; Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act; the1990Americans with Disabilities Act; and the 1988Fair Housing Act as amended.
“Because of my home care I am not locked away in a nursing home,” said Gina Barbara lead organizer of Hidden Treasures Advocacy . “Because of home care I am able to get out of bed and get dressed without these essential services I would be trapped in bed, I am attending grad school to better myself,I am a valued employee serving my community in a local organization.Shame on the Justice Department for trying to take away our rights and lock us away.”
Sister organizations to Hidden Treasures Advocacy that have also expressed outrage at the OLC statement include National ADAPT, New York Caring Majority, the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), the National Disability Rights Network (NDRN), the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Arc of the United States, the American Council of the Blind (ACB), the National Centers for Independent Living (NCIL), Not Dead Yet (NDY) and a multitude of other state and local organizations. The disability and civil rights communities are united in their support for the rights of disabled people to live in their own homes and communities.

The Jones Beach Fireworks Spectacular returns for the 250th anniversary of America's founding on&nbsp;July 4, 2026, with fireworks going live at 9:30 p.m. Officials say there will be over 5,000 fireworks shells lit on a barge more than 2,000 feet offshore, with a soundtrack featuring American music hits from&nbsp;John&nbsp;Philip Sousa to Whitney Houston. There will also be a band playing live music from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and resuming at 10 p.m. after the fireworks show, officials say. This is also a special year at Jones Beach, as the FourLeaf Air&nbsp;Show, headlined by the&nbsp;Blue Angels, will be taking place July 5 and 6, keeping Fourth of&nbsp;July festivities going all weekend long.&nbsp;Prospective attendees are encouraged to arrive early, with beach officials expecting traffic toward the beach to peak at about 6 p.m. There will be a special event fee of $10 for drivers. Organizers say the beach could see as many as 200,000 people July 4.
