District cuts

    I am saddened about what I’ve recently heard of the cuts to our school district that took place this year.  I have children who’ve gone through Wantagh schools and recently heard there were cuts to Computer teachers and Social workers.  My children went through this district at what has been called by neighbors  “the glory years”.  While I still believe this is a good school district and a wonderful place to live it seems our schools have fallen short of what’s not only important but necessary for our children to succeed.  When my children were in elementary school there were Computer teachers and aides to help them learn the important skills they needed.  I’ve been told  these have been eliminated from  the elementary schools in the upper grades where they are needed the most.  I also heard Social workers have been cut from the High School where again older students need this kind of support.  I am thinking at this time of last year and of the Sandy Hook tragedy and of how troubled students need somewhere they can feel safe and discuss their problems in an easily accessible and open atmosphere.  We pay high taxes for these kind of services that in a district like ours should be available to our kids.  We should discuss being safe on the Internet with our children, but at the time my children were in school, and honestly I’m still a little behind, and even now I do not feel qualified to know what is always really safe, and where my older children should or should not be going sometimes.  What seems safe may not always be and I remember my children coming home and telling me about these things they learned in computer class.  I may sound naive but this is a new world with new dangers that are on the news every day.  I would feel much safer knowing our children would have knowledge and reinforcement of these things at school as well as what we can provide them at home. Can anyone inform as to why these cuts were made?  I feel the more we cut, the more our children pay the price.
