WANTAGH, NY — Animal conservationists have brought a humpback whale carcass close to the shoreline after it was spotted less than two miles off shore near Jones Beach.

The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society sent teams to the dead whale Monday afternoon, the eighth large whale incident of the year, the group said. Team arrived at the carcass around 4:15 p.m. and worked with multiple agencies and groups to bring the animal to shore.

The 30-foot whale was still in the surf and extremely dangerous, the conservation group said in a statement Monday evening. The public should stay out of the water and keep at least 150 feet away from the animal on the shoreline as well.

Conservationist teams planned to return to the site Tuesday to secure the whale and bring it onto the beach. An animal necropsy is also planned.

Further details about the animal are expected to be released Tuesday afternoon following the examination, officials said.
