No Swimming At Jones Beach, Day After Shark Bite At Rockaway Beach
There were also possible shark sightings Tuesday leading state officials to make the decision.
WANTAGH, NY — A day after a woman was bitten by a shark in the Rockaways, Jones Beach banned swimming on Tuesday.
Just before 9:30 a.m., a lifeguard spotted a shark near the Central Mall, George Gorman, regional director for the state's Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation, said it was about 10 miles offshore.
They shut swimming at the Central Mall, East and West bathhouses.

While monitoring, Gorman said they noticed two more possible sharks and Field 2 and the East Bathhouse.
Additionally, park officials will have surveillance drones flying near the shore throughout the day, Newsday said.

In Monday's incident, a 65-year-old woman was bitten on the leg near Beach 59th Street, the city Parks Department said.
