Pulse Family-Centered Patient Advocacy Training to be Offered at Hofstra University

Training can help prevent harm to patients from medical error and poor practices.

The Pulse Center for Patient Safety Education & Advocacy is pleased to announce the start of its next series of classes in patient safety advocacy.

Training will take place over three successive Wednesday evenings, November 2, 9 and 16, 6:30-9:30 pm at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY.

“Every sick or injured person under care needs a healthy, trained person to watch out for his or her interests,” says Pulse President Ilene Corina. “This is proven by the grim statistics surrounding medical error and its consequences.”

Such advocacy can range from ensuring staff wash hands or use sanitizers, to providing transportation, to taking notes while a doctor discusses the case — and much more. Often, patient advocates are family members or friends, but people are increasingly becoming trained as professional advocates too.

The Pulse training helps prepare all these individuals to guard against error and poor practices, and to assist in communicating clearly with medical staff. This course teaches the history of patient safety, medication safety, health literacy, communication skills, and much more, and helps you to be an active partner with the medical team for yourself or others.
