Seaford Harbor Students Learn About The Weather With Help From Emmy Winner

Emmy-winning meteorologist Samantha Augeri now operates her own educational venture, "Sam's Weather School."

SEAFORD, NY. — Seaford Harbor Elementary School had a special guest Friday, as Emmy-winning meteorologist Samantha Augeri came to the school to teach students about weather and forecasting in an assembly that connected thought-provoking experiments to phenomena students see in the world every day.

Augeri, now working on her own venture known as “Sam’s Weather School,” spent over an hour with students Friday, showing third graders the equipment professionals use to predict the weather. The equipment displayed included an anemometer, which measures wind speed, and a barometer, which measures air pressure. The assembly also gave kids the opportunity to see, touch and pop a weather balloon.

Other experiments included in the assembly saw Augeri make a cloud out of dry ice and boiling water, or keep water in an upside-down jar using only an index card, sealed shut by air pressure. The assembly concluded with a green screen, which gave students the chance to pose as a meteorologist and present their own five-day forecast.

According to district representatives, the visit was a valuable reinforcement of third-grade science curriculum, which focuses on, among other things, weather and climate.

“Students were able to learn about clouds, storms and the water cycle from a professional meteorologist, enhancing their knowledge of the world around them,” district representatives said.
