Seaford Students Honored For Winning Robotics Competition

The Seaford Sea Lions beat out 39 other teams, and were recognized by County Executive Ed Mangano.

A group of students from Seaford were honored by County Executive Edward Mangano for winning the FIRST LEGO League Long Island Robotics Tournament,

The Seaford team is now advancing to the World Championships, which will be held in St. Louis in April. Mangano presented citations to the winners — Sarah Baker, Samuel Baker, Ashley Rice and Jivan Ramesh— on Monday, honoring them for their accomplishment.

“I congratulate these talented and hardworking students for their impressive accomplishment in winning the Long Island Robotics Tournament, and making Nassau proud,” Mangano said. “I wish you luck in the upcoming World Championships.”

The goal of the competition was to build motorized Lego robots that completed skill tasks, and proposing ways to improve interactions between humans and animals. The winning team, named the Seaford Sea Lions, built a functional robot, designed a database and website for educating the public about possums, and studied whether education impacts perception of an issue. The Sea Lions, aged 8 to 14, beat out 39 other teams of children, judged on their technical skills as well as their professionalism and ability to work as a team.
