Sunrise Highway Worst Nassau Road For Fatal Accidents: Report

A new report by MoneyGeek also reveals which town has seen the most deadly crashes in recent years.

WANTAGH, NY — A new survey of deadliest roads indicates New York state is the 17th-worst for winter traveling.

MoneyGeek analyzed more than 2,700 fatal crashes to find the most deadly 5-mile stretches. The worst road in Nassau County was Sunrise Highway with eight fatal collisions from 2017 to 2019, according to the report.

Overall, there were 220 fatalities in Nassau from 206 accidents. There were 53 speeding incidents, according to MoneyGeek.

Delving deeper, Valley Stream was the worst location in the county with six fatal crashes during that two-year span. Seventeen percent of the fatal accidents involved drunk driving, compared to the 20-percent state average, MoneyGeek said.

There were four fatal crashes in Rockville Centre, although none were from drunk driving.

Lynbrook had three fatal accidents. Freeport and Lawrence each had two deaths from 2017 to 2019.
