Wantagh Elementary School Students Create Clever Contraptions
The school's first Makerspace Fair encouraged children to build, think critically and have lots of fun.
During a fun-filled evening of creativity, Wantagh Elementary School students and their families explored the various science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics activities showcased during the school’s first “Bee a Maker” Makerspace Fair.
As part of the district’s STEAM curriculum, Makerspace brings students together in a designated space to design and create so they can discover, invent and understand principles through hands-on learning.
“The goal of the evening was to showcase activities that allowed students in grades K-5 to create, invent, explore and tinker,” said Principal Dr. Randee Bonagura.

Participants visited the Explorateria where they worked with gadgets and robots, coded with Chromebooks, and worked with science students from Stony Brook University. In the Tinker and Take It section, students made rice rabbits, rainbow loom creations, cell phone speakers and more. In Architecture Alley, Legos, Lincoln Logs and Tinker Toys were provided for an evening of building.
In addition, students were provided with the opportunity to make holiday cards for veterans, pet toys for local animal shelters or welcome home decorations for the family.
