WANTAGH, NY — Wantagh High School has shifted to remote learning and has canceled extracurricular activities after another nine students tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the recent total number of cases to 24, according to published reports.

Fifteen students — including 13 seniors — tested positive for the virus last week following an event outside of school, and school officials placed its entire senior class on remote learning, News 12 reported. The district is now offering free testing for the virus on Wednesday and Thursday, according to a note posted to the district’s website by schools Superintendent John McNamara, Newsday reported.

“Up until last week, we were on an excellent path to further open-up our secondary schools. It is unfortunate that this latest outbreak has delayed this effort,” McNamara wrote.
