Wantagh HS Hosts Annual Intergenerational Dinner

The Wantagh High School Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) under the advisement of high school counselor, Peg Swanson, recently hosted more than 70 guests from the Wantagh Senior Center for the district’s annual complimentary Intergenerational Dinner.

After the dinner, guests have the opportunity to enjoy the final dress rehearsal of the high school musical, Pirates of Penzance. In keeping with the high seas theme, the cafeteria was festooned with whimsical waves and pirate ships. Each table featured a treasure chest brimming with chocolate doubloons and costume jewelry and the seniors wore festive pirate hats to get in the spirit.

While some students spent time the week before the event making the decorations and hats under the guidance of Ellen Kelly, others made the cafeteria welcoming with table settings and decor. Still other students provided delicious home cooked food. The seniors enjoyed a feast of salad, pastas, meat dishes, vegetables, rolls, beverages and desserts, all served by the NHS members. Joining the dinner guests were Acting Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg, Dr. Maureen Appiarius, assistant superintendent for instruction, Carolyn Breivogel, principal of Wantagh High School, Jim Brown, assistant high school principal and Frank Muzio, district director of guidance and counseling.

The executive board of the NHS spent many hours making sure that everything was organized. Pat Lavin and Jillian Rodesk, NHS co presidents, served as hosts of the popular raffle giveaways, The seniors cheered each time a winning number was called. Our guests took home wonderful prizes including tropical plants and gift cards to King Kullen, CVS and Target.

“This event is such a wonderful opportunity for the generations to gain an appreciation for one another," said Lois Susco, coordinator of the Wantagh Senior Center. "The seniors are very grateful.”

The evening was funded in part by a grant from NEFCU. Kelly wrote a grant and it was chosen as part of NEFCU's “Funding Your Ideas” Teacher Grant Program.

Mrs. Swanson affirms, “I think that the Intergenerational Dinner is one of the best events held each year at Wantagh High School. The National Honor Society students work so hard to welcome these special community members to a dinner that is prepared and served by students. Mrs. Kelly made the theme come alive with all of her special touches and the guests especially loved the pirate hats with feathers. Looking around the room and watching everyone enjoy each other’s company was a highlight of the night for me. I could not be more proud of our students. They truly shined on the night of the Intergenerational Dinner!”
