Wantagh HS Students To Perform Musical Comedy

The Wantagh High School Drama Department is performing its annul musical starting Thursday evening with a presentation of the comedy, Pirates of Penzance.

This classic Gilbert & Sullivan comic operetta boasts a band of swashbuckling pirates and damsels in distress portrayed by a talented cast of students and some guest appearances by faculty members playing roles in the Pirate Chorus. The vibrant production includes colorful costumes, live orchestra and a score you will be humming all night long!

The Pirates of Penzance is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W.S. Gilbert. The story concerns Frederic, who, having completed his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two young people fall instantly in love. Frederic finds out, however, that he was born on 29 February, and so, technically, he only has a birthday each leap year.

Frederic' apprenticeship indentures state that he remains apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday, and so he must serve for another 63 years. Bound by his own sense of duty, Frederic's only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully.

Wantagh High School's production is produced and directed by Heather Romano and vocally directed by Stephanie Haas. It features a brilliant cast of actors, singers and dancers supported by a talented orchestra under the baton of the production's Musical Director, Mindy Dragovich as well as a staff and crew led by Tracy Nieves and Heather Jones.
 
The cast, crew, staff, and production team of "The Pirates of Penzance" invites the public to join them on February 7 and 8 at 8 p.m. and on February 9 at 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. in the Wantagh High School Auditorium.  Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door and cost $15 for adults and $12 for students and senior citizens.  For further information, contact Nieves at nievest@wantaghschools.org.
