Wantagh Middle School Authors Win Writing Competition
The two students wrote personal essays that were honored by the Nassau Reading Council.

Wantagh Middle School eighth-grade students Cristian Barberio and Riley McCann were winners in the Nassau Reading Council’s annual Young Author’s Contest.
The the annual competition is designed to encourage writing in the classroom, with this year’s entry focusing on the writing of a personal narrative. Entries were judged on originality, content, authenticity, voice, focus, organization and mechanics. Winning entries will be honored at an awards ceremony, being held at Molloy College, on June 5. In addition, winners’ entries will be published in the NRC Young Author Contest Book.
In his piece, Cristian depicted a moment in time when he knew something was wrong with his grandmother, who had just learned she had cancer. Riley wrote about memories evoked in finding postcards from her grandfather while cleaning the attic with her brother.
