Wantagh Student Named LI Young Scholar of Mathematics

WANTAGH-SEAFORD, NY - From Wantagh Union Free School District: Melanie Volz, a sophomore at Wantagh High School, was one of 83 students named a Long Island Young Scholar of Mathematics by the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students at SUNY Old Westbury. Selection places Melanie in the top one-tenth of 1 percent of math students in the grade across Long Island.

To qualify for the title, Melanie was required to take an exam on proofs and submit a letter of recommendation from a member of the school’s faculty.

This past summer, Melanie attended a class in paradoxes and infinitives at Hong Kong University, hosted by Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Talented Youth Program. She said she is interested in pursuing a career in math, although she is not yet sure of a future field.

Meanwhile, Melanie is co-president of the school Government Organization and treasurer of both the Class of 2021 and Minds Matter Club, which focuses on student mental health. She is also a member of the Tri-M music honor society as a clarinetist, as well as a member of the art honor society. In addition, Melanie participates and competes in Mathletes and Science Olympiad. She also speaks Cantonese and is learning Mandarin.

The Wantagh School District congratulates Melanie on this outstanding academic accomplishment.
