Wantagh Students Learn Spiders And Bats Aren't So Creepy

The students read stories about the creatures, and did special themed crafts.

Creepy crawlers and flying bats are typically on the minds of students in the Wantagh School District during the Halloween season. Mandalay Elementary School students, however, took an educational approach to the study of these traditional spooky critters.

Using their Chromebook computers, kindergarten students in Christine Kopp’s class first read Janell Cannon’s "Stellaluna" from the StorylineOnline site and then illustrated their favorite part of the story. The students also cut out bat patterns and glued on four researched facts about these creatures.

In addition, students designed and created spider webs using cups, pipe cleaners, paper and straws. Carried over from a recent science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics lesson, the goal was for students to design a web strong enough to hold their spiders.
