Wantagh Woman Scammed Out Of $185K; 'Grandson' Needed Bail Money: Cops

WANTAGH, NY — A Wantagh woman was the victim of a phone scam with her transferring more than $185,000 from her account, police said.

The 78-year-old victim received an initial call on April 26 from a man claiming to be her grandson, who needed money for bail, authorities said.

The person instructed her on several occasions to withdraw money from her bank account and send it to various locations.

The woman, on May 8, realized she was scammed and alerted police, who are investigating.
