Winter Storm Targets Wantagh-Seaford: Latest Forecast, Cancellations, How To Prepare

WANTAGH, NY. — South shore residents are among the millions of Long Islanders gearing up for a snowy weekend, as ever-evolving forecasts indicate that the storm could leave 8 to 15 inches of snow on Long Island doorsteps. In Wantagh and Seaford, a cold, windy Saturday will give way to a snowy Sunday and a wintry mix to round out the weekend.

Current National Weather Service forecasts say snow could begin as soon as 1 a.m. Sunday morning, getting heavy as the day continues and leaving upwards of seven inches of snow on Levittown before nightfall. With an additional 2 to 4 inches of snow and sleet in the forecast for Sunday night, total precipitation on the south shore this weekend could reach 11 to 15 inches in total. A winter storm warning is in effect from 3 a.m. Sunday until 6 p.m. Monday, with a cold weather advisory in effect from 10 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday.

In a Friday statement, Hempstead Town Supervisor John Ferretti said the more than 1,200 miles of roadway in Hempstead would be prepared for the storm, urging residents to limit unnecessary travel.

“Our Highway crews are already staged, shift rotations are set, and we’re prepared to provide 24/7 coverage across more than 1,200 miles of roadway throughout Hempstead Town,” Ferretti said Friday. “As the storm approaches, the most important thing you can do is stay informed, limit unnecessary travel, and give our crews the space they need to do their jobs safely. We’re taking this seriously, planning ahead, and will continue to keep residents updated every step of the way.”

Town of Hempstead officials have already canceled all recreation and fitness classes Sunday and Monday. Senior centers in the town have been closed Monday, with programs there canceled as well.
