Yale Scientific Magazine To Feature Wantagh High Schooler
Yale Scientific Magazine and Yale Synapse officials have named Melanie Volz the first winner of a prestigious writing competition.

WANTAGH, NY—Wantagh High School senior Melanie Volz has been named the winner of the inaugural Yale Scientific Magazine and Yale Synapse writing competition for a piece she penned this fall on the impact of science on society, school district officials announced in a news release issued Monday.
The senior’s submission, “Why Society,?” earned her the honor of a feature in Yale Scientific Magazine, an exclusive one-on-one workshop with an editor at the publication, and a $200 scholarship. Volz answered the question presented by contest officials about how she envisions science should interact with society, according to the release.
In a letter to Volz notifying her of the big win, the Yale University Synapse board wrote, “Your essay offered a refreshing and insightful perspective on the interaction between science and society,” and “thank you for leading the next generation of advancement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics,”according to the release.
