I'm writing in response to Patch's recent article, "New Washington Heights High School Launches as Parents Wait on NYPD." I'm a Washington Heights mom, and I want my daughter to have an excellent education so she can have every opportunity to succeed. I also want her to go to school in the neighborhood we call home. It did not always feel like having both of these was an option.
Our family is so happy that my daughter goes to Zeta. She is getting a great education where she lives, where they expect her to achieve and she can be herself. She is learning more in math and reading, while discovering new interests like guitar and theater. Her teachers support her in and out of the classroom, challenge her academically and are preparing her to face the world. They are setting her up for future success, so she can grow up to be whoever she wants to be.
For me, having a Zeta high school in Washington Heights means she will continue to get these opportunities as she gets older. Families in our area should not have to spend time and money leaving their own neighborhood to give their children a great education. Our kids deserve an excellent school, high expectations and caring teachers right here in our community. We now have it. Inspector Portalatin and his officers should be on our side on that, not against us.
