Escaped Prisoner Found At Penn Station: NYPD

David Ortiz escaped custody while receiving medical attention ​at Lenox Health Greenwich Village​ hospital last month.

WEST VILLAGE, NY — The prisoner who escaped custody while receiving medical attention at a West Village hospital last month was arrested Saturday morning in Penn Station, police said.

After ten days on the run, David Ortiz, 31, was arrested and charged with escape at about 7:10 a.m. Saturday, police said. Officers found Ortiz in Penn Station and arrested him without incident.

Ortiz, who was in custody for petit larceny, slipped away from police while wearing leg shackles and walked out of Lenox Health Greenwich Village hospital on 7th Avenue and West 13th Street Dec. 29, police said.

According to NY Daily News, police originally arrested Ortiz for shoplifting at Macy's in Herald Square. Officers then brought Ortiz to the hospital when they noticed Ortiz's finger was bleeding and he had a cut on his chest. These injuries were allegedly from a stabbing a few days earlier, Daily News reports.

The officer who was supposed to watch Ortiz in the hospital was busted for talking on his cellphone when Ortiz escaped. Officer Albert Belcher is currently suspended pending the outcome of an internal review, according to the article.
