5 Hurt In Fire At Chinatown Shop On Mulberry Street: FDNY

CHINATOWN, MANHATTAN — Five people were hurt when a fire broke out at a shop on Mulberry Street Monday, just a block from where a massive fire erupted last week.

Firefighters were called to the 106 Mulberry St. building just before 12:30 p.m. for the fire on the first floor, where a Made in New York gift shop sits between Canal and Hester streets, according to the FDNY. The fire was under control about an hour later.

Four firefighters and one civilian were hurt by the flames, all with minor injuries, an FNDY spokesperson said.

The six-story building sits just a block from where another fire broke out last week.

That fire, in a city-owned building at 70 Mulberry St., erupted around on the fourth floor Thursday evening and had firefighters working well into Friday morning to control the flames.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries and one civilian suffered serious, but not life-threatening, injuries from smoke inhalation in the fire, according to FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro and New York Assembly Member Yuh-Line Niou.

On Monday Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the city helped secure temporary locations for tenants displaced by the fire and that city agencies are working on long-term options as the building is restored.

Organizations that called the building home include the CPC Chinatown Senior Center, the Chinatown Manpower Project Inc., the H.T. Dance Company, the Museum of Chinese in America and the United East Athletic Association.
