The Greensward cheese is known for being bacony with a luscious texture.

GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY — New York City’s Murray’s Cheese’s won third place in the American Cheese Society’s five best-in-show for their Greensward cheese.

Every year since 1983, The American Cheese Society hosts a cheese competition where cheeses from all over North America are ranked. This year, the competition was held from July 27-30 in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Greensward cheese tied for third place with a Gouda from Faribault, Minnesota.

Murray’s Cheese, with locations in Greenwich Village and at Grand Central, created the Greensward cheese two years ago with the Cellars at Jasper Hill, according to their website.

“Greensward in big and bacony, with a luscious, silky texture and notes of forest and resin from its tidy spruce jacket,” says the website.

Murray’s website notes the origin of the winning cheese’s name, stating that Central Park used to be called “Greensward Plan.” Greensward was known for being a peaceful, beautiful haven from busy urban life.

“We created this cheese to have a similar effect on the palate: short of taking a rambling walk through the Sheep Meadow, there’s nothing else in New York that will put your quite mind at ease in the midst of modern craziness,” the website says.

Murray’s is the only place you can get the winning Greensward cheese.
