New SoHo Bakery Promises 'Crispy Heaven' On Grand Street

A new bakery has transformed a space once used for an apartment buildng into a cafe serving European-style bread, sandwiches, pies and wine.

SOHO, MANHATTAN — A new cafe coming to Grand Street promises its baked treats will send customers to "Crispy Heaven."

Crispy Heaven bakery, which plans to open at 38 Grand St., will serve up European-style bread, sandwiches, pies and hot and cold beverages from its storefront between Thompson and West Broadway streets, according to its application with Community Board 2.

The 1,892-square-foot cafe will include eight tables with 16 seats and a window counter with three seats, records show. It will run from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. seven days a week and have ambient background music.

There is no news yet of when Crispy Heaven will open, but owners have been posting updates on the business' Facebook page since they started construction on the storefront last year.

The owners had to transform the 38 Grand St. spot to get it ready to open as an eatery since Crispy Heaven is the first business to use the space as a commercial establishment, records show. The location was previously part of a residential building.

The cafe has also applied for a liquor license to add wine to its menu, the first time the 38 Grand St. spot would be licensed to serve alcohol, according to the board.

Board members said last week that they would approve the license should owners add a list of conditions to their application, including that they won't operate as a bar or have dancing or loud music.

The official vote was to deny the license unless the conditions are added in, but the minutes show the owners have already signed a stipulation agreement with the board so it is likely their license will be approved once they are officially added to the application.

Crispy Heaven was among four new liquor licenses the board said they would approve if a list of conditions — that owners agreed to — were officially added to the application.

Other restaurants on the list include Luke's Lobster's Union Square location on University Place, Red Bamboo vegan and vegetarian spot on West Fourth Street and The Greenwich Social's food hall on Fifth Avenue.
