"New Yorkers have lived through decades of trends—but staying safe will never go out of style," Hoylman said. "This will be a great chance to show off the fun and creative spirit that makes New York the greatest city in the world, and it will help keep us all protected from this dangerous virus."

The Make-A-Mask competition is meant to encourage New Yorkers to follow public health guidelines, which ask that city dwellers cover their faces when outside to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, Hoylman said. Entries for the contest will need to be compliant with the Centers for Disease Control guidelines about face coverings.

To enter the contest, New Yorkers can send photos of their masks to Hoylman@NYSenate.gov or post to social media with the hashtag #MakeAMaskNYC.

The senator said that he is bringing together "an all-star panel of fashionable New Yorkers" to pick the winning masks later this month.

His office will also give out masks to those who are immunocompromised or are senior citizens. Hoylman has delivered thousands of protective face coverings to Bellevue Hospital, Ryan Chelsea-Clinton Health Center and GMHC and said those that need one can reach out to his office.
