25 Years Since 9/11: 343 Flags Placed By Southampton Town Officials In Memory Of Lives Lost

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — With Friday marking 25 years since 9/11, the Southampton Town Department of Public Safety & Emergency Management has worked together to pay eternal tribute.

Department members placed 343 flags in the ground in front of their facility in Hampton Bays in remembrance of September 11, 2001, officials said.

Staff took time to place the flags in the lawn in front of their facility to recognize and remember the lives lost in the attack on the World Trade Center, officials said.

On September 11, 2001 343 FDNY firefighters, 63 law enforcement officers and thousands of civilians lost their lives in the attack. In the 25 years since September 11, 2001, countless more individuals have suffered and perished from 9-11 related illnesses as well, officials said.

In addition, many of the fire departments in the Town of Southampton, and throughout the region, will also be sounding their horns and sirens at times between 8:46 a.m. and 10:28 a.m. to mark the times at which the towers were struck and fell — as well as the times that the Pentagon was struck and Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The effort in the town to sound the horns and sirens was coordinated locally through the Southampton Town Fire Chiefs Council, officials said.

"The Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management asks everyone to take a moment to remember all of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001," said Town Code Compliance and Emergency Management Administrator Ryan Murphy. "We remember all those who lost their lives that day just going to work as normal and all those who gave their lives in an attempt to help and rescue individuals in the Towers. It is also important to reflect and renew the spirit of our country and our communities when we recall how we pulled together in response to this horrible event in our history," Murphy said.

The Southampton Town Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management includes the fire marshal's office, the division of code enforcement, animal control, emergency preparedness and the town's litter crew. Members of all divisions and office staff participate in the memorial effort annually, officials said.

"This is the fifth year that the department has placed the flags out in remembrance of September 11, 2001," officials said.
